After winning acclaim as one-third of a New York comedy team called Funny Gay Males, Smith appeared on The Joan Rivers Show and Comedy Central's For Comics Only. In addition to headlining at comedy clubs nationwide, Smith worked on a book, Growing Up Gay, as well as a screenplay based on Paul Monette's book about a gay stand-up comic, Halfway Home.
